A simple set of spices can normally be found in most households and if you are a keen cook you may even have a cupboard dedicated to them.

Unbeknown to many, most of these spices are multipurpose – whether you are topping your porridge with a dusting of cinnamon or adding a spoonful into your favorite chili con carne recipe, they are versatile enough to be used in a broad range of recipes.

Recently, spices are being recognized more so for their health benefits. For example, did you know that capsaicin – a compound found in chili peppers – is said by some to be a natural painkiller or that the aspartic acid found in fennel could have a positive effect on various digestive issues? These positive effects mean that many spices are now seen as superfoods.
