How to Draw a Realistic Face Step By Step

Most people believe that drawing a realistic face is one of the most complicated aspects of art. A negative thought like this will only end up having you limited in lots of ways. Through this post, Pouted online magazine shows you how to master the process of drawing a realistic face. You will definitely become a pro with the steps outlined below.

1 Getting your pen and paper

These are the first tools you need to draw a realistic face. You are free to use any paper especially during the process of making sketches. An office printer paper can work just fine for this exercise since it doesn’t “bleed”. This will ensure your sketched work doesn’t look clumsy. Furthermore, you need pencils like 2B, HB, 4B, 5B, and 6B. These have their specific functions. Using them whenever required will help you to draw a realistic face.

2 Outlining the face

This should be done in a very light manner. First of all, you need to understand the fact that heads aren’t circular but oval-shaped. In other words, the shape of the human face is similar to that of an egg. Therefore, draw an oval shape which is tapered at its bottom. Please note that this needs to be gotten right to draw a realistic face. Anything short of the correct oval-shape will make people doubt your drawing.

3 Addition of dividing lines

This is another important stage to make your human face drawing look very realistic. Through dividing lines, it becomes very easy to map out the face’s proportions. For instance, this will help you know where the eyes, nose ears, and mouth are supposed to be positioned. Also, understand that this won’t be perfect without the help of a ruler.

4 Drawing the nose

As a beginner, there is no doubt that you will definitely find this process technical to overcome. It is a very complicated feature that will require a great amount of patience on your part. The straight-line drawing method is the simplest amongst others to get this job done. A grid line will be required for this. It will ensure that the measurements are very accurate. Just have a human nose sketched on the grid line.

5 Drawing the mouth

You will notice that there is a line between the upper and lower lips. Also, the mouth is maintaining a particular distance from the nose. In other words, it isn’t close. Once you have drawn yours like the below, start filling the lips’ bottom part.

6 Adding the eyes

Now, two circle balls should be drawn across the line as shown in the images below. These will be regarded as the eye sockets. At each circle’s top, you will draw the eyebrow while the cheekbone will be at the bottom. Always remember that eyes usually take the shape of almonds. Also, don’t forget the rule which states that distance existing between two eyes is always another eye’s width.

7 Drawing the pupil

The eyelid should be drawn over the almond’s top. To define where the eyes tend to meet the nose, a little shading should be added.

8 Adding the ear

This will need to align with the nose’s bottom as shown below. The ears’ top should also align with the eyebrow. Ensure that ears are also flat against each side of the head.

9 Sketching the hair

Avoid making the mistake of having hair place on the head’s top. The process for women and men’s pictures is the same. What is required is some tweaks. Hair should be drawn outwards from the parting. For simplicity, follow how the two lines have been drawn to add a neck in your own drawing.

Final words

After the above processes have been complicated successfully, and you are satisfied with the work, clean the lines using an eraser.
