This coming Summer is looking to be another scorcher, so this first décor trend has emerged as a way to counteract the coming heatwaves. Shading elements such as window blinds, awnings, and exterior shutters are a fashion-forward and utilitarian way to provide shade in your home and reduce how warm the interior of your home gets during hot periods. Exterior shading specifically is expected to have a drastic increase in popularity, as it creates a more ‘tropical look to a home, evoking the style of Balearic buildings.
Accent colours have always had a place in interior decoration, as they provide great contrast and help to draw attention to key areas of a home. But in Summer 2023, we expect a new trend to emerge of introducing accent colours into unexpected areas, traditionally accent colours have been relegated to skirting boards and feature walls, but this trend looks to use accent colours in unexpected areas such as doorways, window frames, and ceilings, to create intrigue and a better sense of flow between rooms.
One of the best parts of Summertime is the extended hours of sunlight during the day, which any interior designer will tell you is great for the look of your home as it’s drenched in natural light all day long. Maximising the sunlight in your home should be a décor priority to get the most out of the long Summer days by tactically placing mirrors in your home to bring warm light to even the darkest corners of your home.
For many designers, retro is always in fashion one way or another, whether it be the Y2K style revival we saw earlier in the 2020s or the 80s retro vibe that was prominent across the 2000s. The latest period to have a retro revival is the 1970s, with many classic ‘70s décor elements such as macrame, wicker furniture, and bold geographic patterns returning to popularity; expect to see warm brown and orange tones, patterned walls, shag rugs, and vintage items from the 1970’s rise to prominence this Summer.
In periods of warm weather, colour pallets tend to stray away from local convention and start to take more inspiration from warmer areas of the world. This year the Mediterranean colour pallet of deep blues contrasted against bright white and gold colours is expected to take the décor world by storm, as many people look to the warm regions of Greece, Turkey, and Italy to inform their décor choice for the coming Summer.
With every year that passes, it feels like more and more focus is put toward sustainability, especially in the décor industry; this year is no different, with a large push toward natural materials and textures on the horizon. As people try to live a more sustainable lifestyle, expect to see a return to more traditional fabrics and materials such as jute, linen, wood, and stone take prominence in the world of décor as homeowners look to move away from artificial materials such as plastic.
