It is on the beach where the weather is better than any other place; however there are many things that you have to bear in mind while being on the beach and during swimming in order to keep yourself and the whole family safe. Here are a few swimming safety tips you have to know before going to the beach.
♦ Learn how to swim: Before going closer to the water and getting your feet wet, you have to know how to swim especially in the surf or you will not come out again. You also have to learn how to handle different problems while swimming in the water.
♦ Swim in the protected areas: Choosing any place to swim in is not recommended at all as it is not safe and risks your life. To be completely safe while swimming, you have to choose those designated swimming areas which are protected by lifeguards in order to get the needed help whenever you find yourself in a trouble.
♦ Obey the lifeguards: Those lifeguards are the most experienced people at the beach and they are aware of everything going on there, so you have to obey them and do not ever think of underestimating what they say. Try to follow all the orders and instructions precisely in order to keep yourself safe and save your life.
♦ Swim sober: Before swimming, you have to avoid drinking alcohol or any other thing that can affect your mind and consciousness while swimming. You have to keep alert and stay aware of everything going on around you.
♦ Do not swim alone: Do not ever try to swim alone in order to find it easy to get the needed help when you face any problem. Try to find someone who can swim with you and it will be better if this person is more experienced than you.
♦ Save some energy for swimming back: When you swim, you have to bear in mind that you will need some energy to return back to the shore. Swimming away from the shore may be exciting for you especially if you are experienced in swimming and have unique skills, but you still need to remind yourself of leaving some energy that is enough for swimming back to the shore.
♦ Life jackets for inexperienced swimmers: Wearing life jackets during swimming is highly essential not just for young children, but also adults who are not experienced in swimming or do not have enough energy to swim for a long time.
♦ Do not dive with your head: When you dive, do not start with your head in order not to break your neck. Start diving with your feet especially if it is the first time for you to dive in that place. You are highly recommended to know the depth and check for any obstructions before diving in any place.
♦ Keep away from water animals and plants: Those animals and plants that you find while swimming are thought to be amazing and safe but in fact there are some animals and plants that are dangerous, so you have to keep away from them while swimming and avoid touching them.
♦ Pay attention to the warning flags: There are warning flags that you will find at the beach and these flags are used in different colors to indicate different things or meanings. You have to know the different meanings in order to be safe.
♦ Keep away from the beach if there is lightning: Do not ever try to swim when there is lightning and even thunder. You have to wait until everything stops in the sky and it is recommended that you wait about 30 minutes after the last thunder boom and before going back again to the beach. There is no need to hurry and risk your life because the beach is always there and will never escape or disappear.
♦ Learn how to deal with rip currents: Rip currents seem to be simple and not dangerous but in fact they are powerful and can kill you easily. They occur near the shore in shallow areas in the water and pull you quickly to the sea even if you are a strong swimmer, it will be stronger than you. Do not ever try to fight or swim against the current. Stay calm, keep breathing and let the current carry you. Swim horizontally to the shore until you come out of the current and if you cannot do this, ask for help by waving your arms and making noise.
♦ Pay attention to children and old people: Those young children and old people need a special care and it is important to pay attention to them while swimming even in shallow water.
